Overview - Demonstrate Finder (same as before), N&C (CDSN Connection - ARA, SNAps, TCP/IP, Netware volume, AppleSearch), productivity apps (MS Windows), Norton Utilities, QuickTime Movie to show breadth & depth of PowerPC compatibility with today's 680X0 Macs
GETTING READY TO DEMO
1.) Familiarize yourself with the DepthGauge Control Panel, that allows you to change Monitor bit depth from a special to the left of the Apple Menu, when you hold down the "Control" key. This allows you to switch depths without going to control panels. THIS SKILL IS CRUCIAL FOR SOME LATER DEMOS (SoftWindows - 256 prefered, PhotoShop - 16 bit required!)
2). Before presentation, dial CDSN connection, and launch N&C client applications. These will remain connected but hidden (via finder ) until ready for demo. All applications to launch will be in 68K demo folder, described below:
N &C Demo (68K compatibility) Setup - all of these steps involve launching a file in the 68K Compatibility Demo folder under the N&C folder - you'll see it!
A. Launch CDSN ARA document. Click on Connect. This is going out via Geoport - have your connector plugged in!
B. Launch Mainframe Connection. This is preset to connect through CDSN to PCC computer. Splash screen should appear. •• If not familiar with this environment, just leave up splash screen, and don't worry about actually logging on! ••

68K Compatiblity DEMO:
• Use depth gauge to change to 8 bit for best performance •
1.) Show Apple Menu, desktop, hard drive, folders, demonstrating same easy-to-navigate environment users are used to.
2.) Show networking & communication compatiblity by brining CDSN connection apps to the foreground. Low level N&C infrastructure if fully compatible under PowerPC. Maybe reveal live N&C connection one at a time off of menu:
- Show ARA Connection dialog running via built-in Geoport modem capability
- Show IBM Host connection via SNA•ps 3270
- Show LAT terminal session via ClarisWorks & Comm Toolbox
- Show TCP/IP telnet Session using MacTCP & TCP/Connect II
- Show Netware volume mounted with drag copy to the Novell server
- Show AppleSearch Client SW:
Select reporter the Health Care. After this loads, you can press the "Start Search" button, and AppleSearch will search from data files from the last 3 days, automatically pulled from 15 different wire services, including AP, Reuters, Ziff Net, etc. The top highest ranking documents best meeting the search criteria will be uploaded when you click on the "News" icon. Open one, and show the highlighted key words. (Play with this a bit!)
Talk about AppleSearch engine.
After demo Quit all of these services before starting the next session, especially Apple Remote Access!
2.) Productivity application compatiblity - launch “PowerPC white paper” MS Word file. Existing 68K version of WORD runs flawlessly. Show how taking System 7 native can speed up even emulated applications. Select all in 28 page document. Go to the font menu and change to a new font. See how fast it happens for entire document. Then change font size - again very fast. Click one of the scroll arrows and admire the speed. And this is under emulation. Microsoft expects MS Word & Excel to be running native within 3 months of intro!.
Don't save changes to document!
3..) HW & Peripheral compatibility
- Describe that Nubus, SCSI devices, monitors will be compatible, including existing device drivers and control panels! Just like all the devlces that we are using for these presentations!
4..) Low-level Utility compatibility
- launch Norton Utilities
- “ Even low level programs like Norton Utilities” run flawlessly on the new PowerPC macs”
• Use depth gauge to change to 16 bit for best QuickTime viewing! •
5.) Quicktime demonstration - optional
Even sophisticated technologies run seamlessly on native System 7. Run 1984 Quicktime movie in Movie player, describing that while Quicktime retains full compatibility, the QuickTime Codecs have been taken native, so everything goes faster!
- Select Double size to fill entire screen with movie
- “ with our high end 80MgHz PowerPC system, Quicktime can support close to 30 frames/second video at full screen in SW only!
